Serguei Kotov (Nikita Mikhalkov) is enjoying the sweet life in his country house together with his captivating wife Maroussia (Ingeborga Dapkounaite) and their vivacious six-year-old daughter Nadia (Nadezhda Mikhalkov) as well as numerous family members and friends. Into this idyllic setting enters Dimitri (Oleg Menchikov), a young man who was brought up by Maroussia's father a decade ago, before leaving under mysterious circumstances.
