Since its creation in 1816 by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann (Ernst Theodor Amadeus) 1776-1822, The Nutcracker has been a Christmas favorite of both children and adults. For almost two hundred years, countless artists, writers, and musicians have reinterpreted this enchanting story of holiday magic; best known among these is no doubt Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's 1892 ballet.
In this beautiful book, the Russian husband and wife team of Azat Minnekaev and Natalia Merentseva have collaborated, with the help of the accomplished children's book writer Michele Sprin, to re-create Hoffmann's original story with their own artful additions. This book was printed in France - 32 pages of beautiful illustrations in full color. The lively text and richly detailed , full-color illustrations produced specifically for this book bring new life to many characters that had been omitted to simplify the story for stage productions. Readers will be surprised and delighted to discover the "tale within the tale", missing from the ballet. All illustrations were done by a famous illustrator Azat Minnekaev. Paintings by Azat Minnekaev were purchased by museums (Museum of the History of Region in St Petersburg, State Museum of Oriental Arts, Moscow), art galleries (Santa-Fe in New Mexico, USA, Art Gallery of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Moscow) and private collectors both in Russia and abroad.
